What To Do When Your Engine Overheats

When you hit the road this summer, you’ll be on the lookout for fun adventures, not getting stranded on the side of the road. Your engine naturally runs hot, especially if it’s been a while since your last tune-up, and in the blistering summer heat it runs even hotter. An overheated engine can seize up or damage itself, so it’s important to be able to recognize the signs of overheating, and to know what to do if your vehicle is dangerously hot. Read on with the service experts here at Downtown Auto Group as we take a look.

Signs Your Engine Is Overheating
There are a number of early warning signs to watch for that may indicate your engine is beginning to overheat:
- The engine temperature gauge needle spikes to indicate “hot.”
- The “Check Engine” or “Temperature” light comes on.
- Leaking radiator coolant can cause a sweet smell.
- Smoke-like steam coming from under the hood.
What To Do
If your engine begins to overheat, here’s what you need to do to help your vehicle cool down and avoid engine damage:
- Turn off the A/C, and turn up the heat. This will help vent it from the engine.
- Pull over in a safe location and shut off the engine for at least 15 minutes.
- Add radiator fluid or coolant if you have extra on hand.
- Carefully restart the engine, and drive directly to the nearest service centre. If the engine starts to overheat again, repeat the above steps.
- If your vehicle won’t restart, the nearest service centre is too far away, or it keeps quickly overheating, call a tow truck for assistance.
What Not To Do
A few things to remember if your engine is overheating:
- Don’t continue to drive on an overheating engine. You may risk causing serious, irreparable damage.
- Don’t ignore the problem. If your engine is indicating overheating, you should have it serviced immediately.
- Don’t immediately open the hood. You may want to help ventilate the engine, but you risk burning yourself if you don’t let it cool down a bit first.
