Prepare Your Vehicle for Spring Road Trips

Spring is finally here in Toronto, and we believe most of you already can’t wait to head out on a spring road trip. But, did you know winter driving can take a toll on your vehicle? Road salt, potholes, and freezing temperatures can all contribute to extra wear. As temperatures rise, now is the perfect time to get ahead of it before you hit the road. Read on with our team at Downtown Auto Group as we walk through a simple checklist to get your vehicle ready for spring road trips in Toronto, including tires, brakes, fluids, battery, lights, and your emergency kit.

Vehicle Checklist for Spring Road Trips in Toronto

1. Tires

Before you head out, your tires are usually the first thing to check. Start with tread depth. Most tires come with built-in tread wear indicators, which are tiny raised bars sitting inside the grooves. Once your tread wears down to the same level as those bars, it’s a clear sign you’re nearing the end of the tire’s safe life. Then, check tire pressure. Winter temperatures in Toronto usually drop PSI by a few points, and even when the climate warms up, the pressure doesn’t always correct itself. Inflate them to the manufacturer-recommended PSI, which you’ll find on the sticker inside the driver’s door. If you’re still on winter tires, don’t forget to swap them out.

2. Brakes

One common thing we see is light surface rust on the brake rotors after the car has been sitting or exposed to a lot of moisture. In many cases, that rust will wear off after a few stops, but if you’re hearing consistent squeaking, that’s usually a sign the pads or rotors need attention. Brake pads themselves also wear down over time, and winter driving tends to speed that up. Most pads start around 10 to 12 mm thick, and once you get down closer to 3 to 4 mm, it’s time to replace them. If you’re not quite sure how to measure the brake pads, our service team at Downtown Auto Group can take a look for you.

3. Fluids

Modern engines in Canada typically run on low-viscosity oils like 0W-20 or 5W-30, which are designed to flow better in cold weather. But, low temperatures also make it thicken. If your oil looks dark or feels overdue, a spring oil change is a good idea. Don’t forget to check your coolant, as it protects against corrosion inside the cooling system, which is important after months of freeze-thaw cycles. Windshield washer fluid is another simple one, but very relevant for spring driving in Toronto. You don’t want your visibility to be compromised by bug splatter building up or by unexpected rain, making it harder to see clearly on the road.

4. Lights

Checking your lights is another highly recommended task on the checklist, as they’re not just cosmetic; they are directly tied to your safety and the safety of everyone else on the road. These include headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights. If you have someone with you, have them check the lights from outside the vehicle. If not, you can park near a reflective surface like a window or garage door to confirm that all lights are working in order.

5. Battery

Cold weather slows down the chemical reaction inside the battery, which reduces its ability to hold a charge. At the same time, your engine needs more power to start in freezing temperatures, so the battery ends up working overtime all winter long. Before you head out for a spring trip, if you have a multimeter, a healthy battery should read around 12.6 volts with the engine off. If you’re seeing something closer to 12.2 volts or lower, that often means the battery is getting weak. It might still start the car today, but it won’t have much reserve left in the future. If you don’t have the right tools, you can visit Downtown Auto Group and have your battery tested by our service team.

6. Emergency Kit

This is the part most people skip. At Downtown Auto Group, we always tell drivers to be ready for the unexpected by bringing an emergency kit along for the ride, such as jumper cables, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and a power bank. A basic toolkit, as well as a reflective warning triangle, a car jack, spare tire, and more, are also good to have. You might never need any of it, but if you do, you’ll be very glad it’s already sitting in your trunk.
